As well as our weekly classes, we run a 10-week trauma informed karate course. This has been designed by our lead instructor, Heidi, for victims of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and other trauma survivors. The course is completely non-contact and no physical touch. The classes are split by gender and age.
The trauma-informed programme was designed as a stepping stone and a platform for women to safely participate in martial arts. In the course you will learn basic karate techniques and kata (a series of moves) which works in a similar way to other movement therapies. During the class, you will not be asked to talk about your experience, but instead guided to build friendships within the group as you learn together.
This is not a self-defense course. Self-defense courses can be incredibly triggering for victims of abuse often causing anxiety. Instead, this course focuses on your body and the movements, building your confidence and self-esteem. After the course, many participants go on to join the mainstream karate classes which include elements of self-defense.
Read our testimonials below to see what participants have to say about the course.
